5. PORT ROYAL, JAMAICA

Seventeenth century life in Port Royal, Jamaica, commonly referred to as “the wickedest city on earth”, conjures up images of marauding pirates, treasure hunters, naval conquests, looting, and the overindulgence of food, alcohol, gambling, and women. But the extravagances of the wealthiest port in the West Indies came to a rapid end at precisely 11:43 on 7th June 1692, when Port Royal was consumed by an earthquake and almost the entire city sank into the sea. Today, Port Royal is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Caribbean and the only sunken city in the Western Hemisphere.

4. THE PYRAMIDS OF YONAGUNI-JIMA, JAPAN

The Yonaguni Monument is a massive underwater rock formation off the coast of Yonaguni, Japan. There is a debate about whether the site is completely natural, is a natural site that has been modified, or is a man-made artifact. The site is also known in Japanese as “The Yonaguni (Island) Submarine Ruins”.

3. DWARKA, GULF OF CAMBAY, INDIA

The legendary city of Dwarka was the dwelling place of Lord Krishna. It is believed that due to damage and destruction by the sea, Dwarka has submerged six times and modern day Dwarka is the 7th such city to be built in the area. According to Hindu legend the god Krishna built a city which was ultimately destroyed by rising sea levels. Now archaeologists and Indian Navy divers are investigating underwater ruins in Dwarka on India’s western coast, believed to be Krishna’s city.

2. LION CITY OF QIANDAO LAKE, CHINA

In September 1959, the Xin Anjiang Dam began construction to create a reservoir and 290,000 people from Lion City were relocated altough they had lived there for over one-thousand years. The reservoir was designed to flood any area below an altitude of 108m above sea level putting Lion city at 30-40m underwater. Big Blue, a dive operator based in Shanghai, runs year-round weekend trips twice a month to Qiandao Lake and has begun exploration of this submerged city.

The ruins of Cleopatra’s palace and temple complex were submerged 1,600 years ago because of earthquakes and tsunamis. Divers are finding stunning artifacts, including coins, a statuette of a pharaoh and tiny amulets, making it one of the richest underwater archaeological sites in the world.
