Freudian Slip? State Dept. Official Says Assad Can Stop the War ‘Right Now’

State Department spokesperson Jeff Rathke says Syrian President Bashar Assad has the power to stop the conflict in his country “right now.” This miraculous cessation of hostilities, according to Rathke, would occur as a natural consequence of the Syrian leader demonstrating “a willingness for his regime to engage in meaningful dialog with the opposition that would lead to a genuine political solution.”

How can Rathke be so confident of this? I can think of only one scenario in which the entering into such talks by the Syrian government could possibly bring about the aforesaid instantaneous halt in terrorist bloodshed engulfing the country–and that would be if the beheaders of ISIS were taking orders from someone–say perhaps, for instance, the US or Israel? Or maybe Turkey or Saudi Arabia?

Do you suppose that’s what was going through Rathke’s mind when he made this apparent little slip of the tongue?
